Spiritual formation is the process of replacing our old fallen nature with Christ-like character, through the Holy Spirit's transformation and renewal. It is a work of God that requires the participation of the believer. Although study of God's word is a part of the process, spiritual formation is more about behavior than knowledge. Sadly, it is possible to learn volumes of information about God and Christian living but not actually walk the walk. A Christian must intentionally develop new habits for living in the kingdom of God. Spiritual formation teaches people how to walk with Jesus daily.
Beta is a spiritual formation course that is designed to better equip us to live out the Christian faith as individuals and as members of the body of Christ. We share a meal together, hear a brief teaching from the Scriptures, and then encourage and support each other through small group discussion. For this season of life at New Grace, we are working through The Apprentice Series, a three book study by James Bryan Smith.
If you would like to read a sample of The Good and Beautiful God (Book 1 in The Apprentice Series), the first chapter can be viewed by clicking here. Also, books are now available for purchase from the church office for $15.
In his classic book, The Practice of the Presence of God, Brother Lawrence speaks of our need to be formed by the Spirit of God by abiding in His presence. Daily Prayer is a time to abide in the Spirit's presence corporately. We come together as a staff and community to create a space for the Holy Spirit to move. We find that every time we make room for him in our busy lives, he comes and fills them—every time. We desire more of God in our own lives and in our church.
Who is welcome?
Anyone in the New Grace community is welcome to come and pray. This service is led by the clergy and staff of the church, but is for anyone who desires to lift our personal needs and the needs of our community up to the Lord.
What should I expect?
The format is simple. Once we are gathered, we open with a reading from God's word, followed by a group discussion of the chosen passage. After this, we share thanksgivings and prayer requests, making our needs known to others. Finally, we lift these concerns up to the Lord, asking him to meet us and guide us as his people.
Daily Prayer begins at 9am in the Sanctuary and is offered Monday-Friday. For more information, please email Mike McDonald.
